My Story

Hi, my name is Nikki O’Brien, and I am the creator behind The Heirloom Lilac Company. The idea for The Heirloom Lilac Company was born from my love of crafts and my love of gifting quality creations to others.

I was laid off from my career in the live entertainment industry during the 2020 pandemic, and with free time on my hands, turned to YouTube to teach myself something I’d always wanted to do- quilt. With that, my love of creating with my sewing machine was born. I started making quilts for friends and family, and loved the ability to express myself with color and fabric choices, and create something that the end user would lovingly wrap themselves with for years to come.

During my second pregnancy, while on maternity leave, I decided to expand my skill set and teach myself to create other items in addition to quilts- cosmetic bags, duffle bags, embroidered baby blankets and more.

I’m always creating and learning, and wanted a platform to offer my services for when people reach out to ask “Can you make this for me?”

The Heirloom Lilac Company is a one stop shop for all of my creative efforts, and will continually expand as my skillset evolves. The name for the company was inspired by the lilac bush I have growing in my yard. This lilac bush actually started out in my grandmother’s yard in the 1950s, and in the mid 90s, my late Mom, who absolutely loved the smell of lilacs, took a clipping of it and transplanted it to our home in Western Maryland. I took a clipping of this same plant and now have it growing in my yard- so this lilac bush has come to symbolize an heirloom of love that has passed down in my family for three generations. My hope for you is that these handmade items get passed down in your family for generations to come, too.
